Digital photo frame

Summary: Digital photo frames are a unique and affordable way to display your best digital photos.

A digital photo frame is the correct answer to you question about how best to display your digital photos.  A high end display company, PhotoVu features the slogan “out of the shoebox and onto the wall”™.

Not for all of your digital photos, but the best ones. The meaningful photos. The portraits.  The photos you have thought about getting printed,

matted, framed and hung on the wall.  Now, you can skip some of steps and go directly to the display mode.

Options abound

There are a growing number of products on the market that fit the bill for displaying your digital photos.

Multiple sized displays, from an inch to a yard, reflect a developing market that is beginning to react to the demands of an expanding market.

Advantages to digital frames

  •  Photos displayed in high resolution and never fade or discolor
  •  Multiple photos displayed in slideshow gallery
  •  Photos displayed in the order and duration you desire
  •  Portability
  •  Tabletop display or wall mounting options
  •  Ease in adding or deleting photos
  •  Support for multiple format memory cards direct form you camera
  •  Multimedia…some frames have audio options with built-in speakers
  •  Some high end display feature wireless connectivity

Disadvantages to digital frames

  • Developing technology advances and a rush to market sometimes results in less than perfect product
  • Cost…a wide price range from $50 to $800 msrp results in confusion for the buyer
  • Inconsistent advertising literature that results in frustration after purchase

Making the right choice

When choosing a digital frame product you will have to decide where you want to display the frame.  If a power cord is necessary,

a wall outlet should be nearby.

Research the marketplace.  There is no better place than the internet.  Your search for “digital photo frame” will yield high results and multiple options and pricing points.

The great feature of the internet is the ability to read product reviews offered by consumers and professionals.  Read the coustomer comments and avoid the manufacturer propaganda.

See it, feel it

After you decide on a brand and have narrowed  your choice, take a trip to a retailer.  Presently, the frames are showing up in photo shops and electronics stores.

Check  out the product firsthand.  Look for the quality in assembly, the ease of operation and accessibility of ports for uploading images.

Most important is checking the quality of the display.  Ask a knowledgable sales person about the product and request a demonstration. It is easier to know how the display works before you take it home.

In a random search on the internet Portraitsecrets  discovered hundreds of choices, so we visited our trusted staff at Provident Camera in Cincinnati.  They advised us on a couple of products in the $100 to $200 range that provided display quality and ease of operation.

Again, we affirmed out belief that there is a price/quality link, but emerging technology will continue to drive the price lower as competition increases.

A final thought

Research pays off before you buy and  a hands on comparison, if possible, will offer you the greatest satisfaction after your purchase.  Always, seek out knowledgable sales people and ask questions before you buy.

Tip of the Day

Good photographs begin with good light. In the digital photography world, the quality of light corresponds to the quality of the photograph. The dramatic light of the early morning and late afternoon can raise the quality of your images. In poorly lit situations use supplemental lighting from the camera's flash in the fill-flash mode.

Q & A

Adobe's Photoshop is very expensive at nearly $700, Is it worth it?
Dear PS,

On the cheap in Oregon

Dear On the cheap,
Yes! If you plan to take creative steps in dealing with your images, photoshop and the lastest Creative Suite 2 are simply the best and most efficients image handling programs available. Is it "worth it" to you, that depends on what you hope to achieve with your images. I would suggest the Elements version of photoshop as an entry level position. Better yet, check a local computer store or even the Apple Store an invest a little time in attending a couple of their tutorial classes for a "test drive" of the program. Then you'll be better informed before you spend your money.
