Digital camera advice from professional sources gives the complete picture

Summary: How to use your digital camera, make the best prints, choose the right lens, select the proper gadget bag or what camera should you buy? Great questions! PORTRAITSECRETS is proud to have a professional advisory association with Provident Camera in Cincinnati, Ohio.

PORTRAITSECRETS has some of the answers to your questions, and like any reasonable outfit we realize that in the quick change world of digital photography we might not know everything. So, in a proactive move, we have taken the first step in deepening our resource pool to provide you with a wider range of opinions.

Three generations of service

Our friends at Provident Camera in Cincinnati have three generations of service in the professional photography world. Provident, founded by Nathan Berkowitz in the late 1920's, was the result of endless inquiries about his chosen profession by friends and associates of the man affectionately called "Mister B.".

Berkowitz, a native of Winchester, Ky. and a photo retoucher by trade, opened a camera store in Cincinnati that would provide merchandise along with his explanations about techniques and the latest equipment for both professional and amatuer photographers.

Ben Lefton assists Marla Wertheim as she asks questions about features on a Nikon D-70 digital camera.

Embracing technology

Operated today by Rick and Ben Lefton, the third generation retailer has fully embraced today's technology while retaining a customer friendly approach to developing and retaining business.

As a full-service lab and fully-stocked retailer, Provident continues to be a trusted resource for professional and amature photographers in the Cincinnati region. Povident Camera can be found on the worldwide web at providentcamera.com and is a member of the Photo Finale network of photofinishers.

You are our mission

You can be sure that PORTRAITSECRETS will reflect all that is changing in the digital realm while aispiring to offer many of our tips, techniques and opinions just like the affable "Mister B.", all those years ago. We'll bounce our ideas and observations off of colleagues and professionals like those at Provident Camera to give you the up to date and inspirational information you deserve.

Tip of the Day

Good photographs begin with good light. In the digital photography world, the quality of light corresponds to the quality of the photograph. The dramatic light of the early morning and late afternoon can raise the quality of your images. In poorly lit situations use supplemental lighting from the camera's flash in the fill-flash mode.

Q & A

Adobe's Photoshop is very expensive at nearly $700, Is it worth it?
Dear PS,
Adobe's Photoshop is very expensive at nearly $700, Is it worth it?
On the cheap in Oregon

Dear On the cheap,
Yes! If you plan to take creative steps in dealing with your images, photoshop and the lastest Creative Suite 2 are simply the best and most efficients image handling programs available. Is it "worth it" to you, that depends on what you hope to achieve with your images. I would suggest the Elements version of photoshop as an entry level position. Better yet, check a local computer store or even the Apple Store an invest a little time in attending a couple of their tutorial classes for a "test drive" of the program. Then you'll be better informed before you spend your money.

Thanks for your question,
Michael at PS
