Photoshop tutorial and glamour

Summary: Adobe photoshop can be used to obtain a glamour photography effect. See the "how-to" steps using this creative software program to add glamour to your everyday pics.

Portraits require creativity.  You can use

This portrait, unaltered and direct from the memory card, is pleasing to the eye. However, a simple adjustment in photoshop can add a bit of glamour to the composition.

portrait.

The technology offered by photoshop allows for cropping, color correction and thousands of other changes to the image. Using the "diffuse glow" filter hearkens back to the old school printing technique of using a piece of nylon hosiery between the photo enlarger and the photo paper being exposed to "soften" the image and add a bit of glamour to a photograph.

This is the photoshop file, opened and ready for adjustment. The editing software, Photo Mechanic, is displayed in the background.

The diffuse glow filter is found the the photoshop menu under filters. Cascade down the menu and click to the right for diffuse glow.

The filter window displays the untouched imagein the left side of the window. The results of adjusting the graininess, glow amount and clear amount can be previewed before making a final change to the image.

The results of changes to the image allow for multiple corrections before deciding on how much to alter the image.

The image, opened and saved after adjustment, is ready to be archived for future use. It is displayed in front of the editing software Photo Mechanic.

Tip of the Day

Good photographs begin with good light. In the digital photography world, the quality of light corresponds to the quality of the photograph. The dramatic light of the early morning and late afternoon can raise the quality of your images. In poorly lit situations use supplemental lighting from the camera's flash in the fill-flash mode.

Q & A

Adobe's Photoshop is very expensive at nearly $700, Is it worth it?
Dear PS,
Adobe's Photoshop is very expensive at nearly $700, Is it worth it?
On the cheap in Oregon

Dear On the cheap,
Yes! If you plan to take creative steps in dealing with your images, photoshop and the lastest Creative Suite 2 are simply the best and most efficients image handling programs available. Is it "worth it" to you, that depends on what you hope to achieve with your images. I would suggest the Elements version of photoshop as an entry level position. Better yet, check a local computer store or even the Apple Store an invest a little time in attending a couple of their tutorial classes for a "test drive" of the program. Then you'll be better informed before you spend your money.
